Senior figures within the Scottish Premier League are optimistic that it will expand to include 14 teams, in a bid to restructure the league so it becomes more competitive and attracts increased investment.
According to BBC Sport, division bosses have considered a number of different options including increasing the league to 24, but chief executive Neil Doncaster insisted that no final decision on the issue has yet been taken.
"The 12-team format is something that people perceive has possibly seen its best," he told the news provider. "I am always hopeful that we can achieve things as soon as possible, but there is an awful lot of work to be done."
Doncaster added that he has been "delighted" by the willingness of Scottish Premier League football clubs to put new ideas forward and said there is a "general consensus" among teams that changes must be made.
In June, the Edinburgh Evening News reported that Heart of Midlothian were considering introducing a 7:00pm kick-off time to attract more families to attend matches.
