IFAB wants split-second goal line replays

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has agreed to discuss the possibility of introducing goal line technology, but insists any decisions made using video replays must be taken almost instantaneously.

In a statement released yesterday (October 20th 2010), the organisation invited firms to submit proposals for the new gadgets by the end of next month, but stressed that the referral of incidents to the fourth official must not delay matches.

"The indication of whether a goal has been scored must be immediate and automatically confirmed within one second," the IFAB said. "The technology would apply solely to the goal line."

FIFA previously considered the matter two years ago, but quietly shelved the idea after determining that replays would not work as effectively in football as they do in sports such as cricket and tennis.

However, many senior figures in the game - including England coach Fabio Capello - have come out in favour of goal line replays in recent months.
