The Football League has rejected a proposal from Championship football club Portsmouth which would have seen the south coast outfit finally exit administration after several months.
Portsmouth ended last season with debts of over £100 million and were a regular fixture on newspaper back pages due to their ownership troubles, but they have been asked to provide clarification on four unspecified issues before the plan can proceed.
"We need to blow some of these dark clouds away from this club," manager Steve Cotterill told BBC Radio Solent. "Let somebody else have the spotlight for a while. We've been under it perhaps for the wrong reasons."
The club explained in a statement that it will "take time to consider" the Football League's response before making a decision on how to proceed.
Hong Kong-based businessman Balram Chainrai has been looking to buy Portsmouth in recent months, with his bid earning the backing of administrator Andrew Andronikou.
