English managers 'overlooked for top jobs'

Football Referees, Players, Managers and Media

Former Charlton Athletic and West Ham United boss Alan Curbishley has criticised English Premier League football clubs for overlooking domestic managers in favour of foreign names.

In an interview with the Independent, Curbishley claimed that native talent such as Sunderland chief Steve Bruce and Blackburn Rovers' Sam Allardyce have not received the media acclaim they deserve.

"Maybe it's an image thing - I'm not too sure," he said. "We've got to be very mindful of how many English managers we can pick from, because there are less and less in the [English Premier League]."

Curbishley expressed support for an FA idea which could see club coaches become involved with the national side and implied that the plan could provide English managers with valuable experience of international football.

In September, ex-Bolton Wanderers boss Allardyce told reporters he could do a successful job at a top European club if it was not for his media image.
