Bristol City given new stadium deadline

Championship football club Bristol City have been given more time to submit their objection to a scheme which could spell the end of their plans to build a new stadium at Ashton Vale.

Residents in the area are hoping that the site will be designated a town green - effectively preventing any construction on the plot - but the Bristol Evening Post has revealed that the club now have until November 9th 2010 to reiterate their stance.

"We have carefully considered the request for an extension to the deadline and have decided that both parties must make any further representations by November 9th," said Bristol City Council spokesman James Easey.

Independent inspector Ross Crail backed the application to grant the area town green status in the summer, but Bristol City have stepped up their efforts to win planning permission in the following months and weeks.

The announcement came after local MPs and Bristol City chairman Steve Lansdown took their campaign to Westminster.
