Liverpool councillor warns against stadium plan

The American consortium currently battling to win control of Liverpool has been warned by the leader of the local authority that any attempt to redevelop Anfield would most likely be blocked.

Speaking to the Guardian, councillor Joe Anderson explained that Liverpool City Council continues to favour the original scheme to build a new stadium in nearby Stanley Park ahead of any refurbishment of the existing stadium.

"I would discourage [New England Sports Ventures] from redeveloping Anfield and would encourage them to stick to the commitment that is already in place," he told the newspaper.

Mr Anderson added that he is eager to meet with the group to find out what its intentions are and said the local council simply wants to see the uncertainty surrounding the issue "resolved one way or another".

Current co-owner Tom Hicks has already pledged to take the organisation to court, claiming its takeover bid undervalues the English Premier League football club.
