Tottenham Hotspur have made a surprise bid to win the tenancy of the Olympic Stadium in south London, despite having plans to overhaul their existing White Hart Lane ground approved.
With the deadline for offers from potential tenants having passed at midday yesterday (October 1st 2010), few had expected the English Premier League football club to enter the running for the Stratford Venue, but they have expressed an interest.
"It is only prudent and good management that we ensure that we investigate all possible options for the club," chairman Daniel Levy said in a statement. "We shall keep everyone connected with the club updated over the coming months."
He added that Tottenham Hotspur were "delighted" at Haringey Council's decision to give the green light to the club's £400 million scheme to rebuild White Hart Lane, but stressed the importance of keeping their options open.
The potential move to Stratford is likely to prove controversial among the team's football fans, as it would see them uprooted from their traditional north London home to the other side of the River Thames.
