Sheffield Wednesday chairman Howard Wilkinson has warned football fans that the League One side could fall into receivership if he and chief executive Nick Parker leave the club.
The former Leeds United manager confronted supporters demonstrating after the team's recent 1-0 defeat at home to Southampton and insisted there are interested parties considering investing in the Hillsborough outfit.
"If Nick and I walk away - and both of us have got a lot of reasons to walk away - the club would be in receivership next week," he said. "That is the end of the road if that happens, or the beginning of the end."
Wilkinson added that the club are "close" to securing much-needed funding, but declined to supply any specific details and acknowledged the club are "fighting" for their lives.
A consortium led by ex-Sheffield Wednesday manager and one-time Manchester United goalkeeper Chris Wilson has been strongly linked with a buyout in recent weeks.
