Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has lent his support to the right of the club's football fans to stage demonstrations against widely unpopular owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

Thousands of supporters gathered after the team's fixture against Sunderland on Saturday (September 25th 2010) to protest against the American pair's handling of the English Premier League football club.

"You cannot criticise the fans for showing their displeasure about the ownership problem," the former Fulham boss said. "They want to see the club moving forward and not [be] sort of stuck with owners who are trying to sell the club."

In a symbolic gesture after the match, midfielder Steven Gerrard applauded the fans who had stayed behind at Anfield, with banners and flags outlining their opposition to Gillett and Hicks hanging from the stadium's stands.

Supporters' group Spirit of Shankly is planning further action before the upcoming game against Blackpool, with a march due to take place ahead of kick-off.
