Ex-manager 'set for Sheffield Wednesday takeover'

A consortium headed by former Sheffield Wednesday manager Chris Turner is on the verge of gaining control at the troubled League One football club, according to some media sources.

The ex-Manchester United and Sunderland goalkeeper is believed to have been in talks with the Hillsborough side's board of directors for several weeks and appears poised to beat competition from rival investors.

Rotherham-born Sheffield Wednesday football fan Spencer Fearn and property developer Dennis Hobson have also been linked with bids for the club, but recent events suggest Turner and his group are in the driving seat.

Sheffield Wednesday are currently burdened by debts of £26 million and it was only a last-minute agreement with the Co-operative Bank which saved the team from an HM Revenue and Customs winding-up petition earlier this month.

Chairman Howard Wilkinson suggested after the High Court hearing that potential buyers had "played a part" in helping the club to secure the credit necessary to stave off the efforts of the tax office.
