Scottish Premier League 'planning overhaul'

Radical changes could be made to the Scottish Premier League from next season, which will see Rangers, Celtic, Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian field reserve teams in a restructured third division.

According to the Guardian, league bosses are looking at ways to arrest the recent slide in spectator interest and revenues and the preferred alternative is to create a two-division upper tier, with 14 teams appearing in each tier.

"B" teams from some of the country's top sides would then supplement Scotland's new third division, after the scrapping of the Scottish Premier League's reserve division left teams unable to give players competitive experience.

A source close to the discussions said next term could be "the perfect opportunity" to make alterations, but admitted the plans could yet face opposition from the Scottish Football League, which is responsible for the lowest three professional leagues.

Earlier this summer, the Scotland Herald reported that the start of the 2011-12 Scottish Premier League season could be brought forward to mid-July.
