Kilmarnock chief calls for TV rights overhaul

Kilmarnock chairman Michael Johnston has called on Scottish Premier League bosses to alter the way the division's revenues are distributed between its football clubs to make it more competitive.

In an interview with BBC Radio Scotland, Johnston insinuated that the current system is inherently flawed and favours Glasgow's Old Firm over smaller teams and suggested Rangers and Celtic are blocking reform.

"It has long been my view that there is a disparity in the financial model and that it is loaded in favour of Rangers and Celtic," he explained. "We could examine the distribution of revenues, principally TV contracts."

Johnston pointed out that 32 per cent of income from TV rights is allocated to the teams who finish first and second and claimed a more even spread of media cash would give sides further down the table a chance to close the gap.

His comments came after Rangers manager Walter Smith expressed concern about the "disparity" between European leagues and backed UEFA's impending financial fair play rules.
