Bristol City's plans to move into a state-of-the-art new stadium have been dealt a significant blow, after the location they were planning to move to was recommended to the local authority to receive town green status.
An independent expert agreed with local campaigners and stated the 42-acre Ashton Vale plot - which incorporates a former landfill dump - should be declared a town green, effectively blocking any future construction on the site.
"I am shocked and disappointed at the independent inspector's conclusion," said Liberal Democrat deputy council leader Simon Cook. "Designating the whole 42 acres in question seems utterly unreasonable."
Bristol City Council endorses the plan to construct a new ground and is believed to be looking at ways to resolve the dispute, amid concerns it could have an impact on England's 2018 FIFA World Cup bid.
The news came after Sainsbury's resubmitted proposals to build a supermarket to replace the existing Ashton Gate stadium, which is key to providing funding for Bristol City's scheme.
