West Ham United chief calls for loan overhaul

West Ham United co-owner David Sullivan has urged the FA to reconsider its rules regarding player loans between top-flight clubs, following a close season of frantic activity.

In an interview with ESPN Soccernet, the former Birmingham City chief pointed out that there are no restrictions on the number of footballers brought in on loan from foreign leagues and claimed an urgent review is required.

"It is madness the English clubs are penalised, compared to foreign clubs, when you can only loan two players even from Championship or [English Premier League] clubs," he explained.

Sullivan also called on players to accept mandatory pay cuts in the event of relegation and suggested the parlous state of many football clubs' finances could force the proposal through sooner rather than later.

Last month, the Guardian claimed English Premier League bosses are looking into the possibility of banning loans between teams in the division, to prevent clubs like Manchester City from stockpiling players.
