Preliminary work is underway ahead of the construction of League Two football club Rotherham United's new 12,000-seater stadium in the town centre, it has been revealed.

According to the Yorkshire Post, directors anticipate the facility will be completed in time for the start of the 2012-13 football season and chairman Ron Hull told the newspaper of his excitement at the prospect.

"As a Millers fan myself, I know just how pleased everyone will be that preparation work is starting to happen," he explained. "I think it will show the people of Rotherham that the progress that is being made on the new stadium is gathering pace."

Rotherham United are temporarily based at Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium and Mr Hull claimed the new ground will provide "the best possible facilities" for Ronnie Moore's team and their football fans.

Last month, organisers of the 2012 Olympic Games invited bids for the future tenancy of its stadium in Stratford, with West Ham United among the frontrunners.
