This summer's FIFA World Cup proved to be a largely disappointing spectacle for football fans, according to new research carried out by the Football Fans' Census (FFC).
An article in the Independent has revealed that a recent poll of 1,000 British supporters suggested that the showpiece event was one of the least entertaining international tournaments of the last two decades.
Euro '96 - which took place in England and saw Terry Venables' team reach the semi-finals - topped the list of 11 competitions with an average rating of 8.3, while the events in South Africa languished in 10th place.
"France '98 and Germany 2006 clearly served up more entertaining fare despite average performances from the [English] national side," the FFC's Jon Buck explained. "Both tournaments yielded good football and drama."
The 2010 FIFA World Cup was overshadowed by fierce debates over the quality of its football and the vuvuzela, which was swiftly banned by a number of British football clubs.
