UEFA imposes vuvuzela ban

Football Leagues/ Association and Governance

UEFA has announced that the controversial vuvuzela will not be permitted at qualifying matches for Euro 2012 or UEFA Champions League fixtures, citing concerns over their effect on stadium atmosphere.

The plastic horns sharply divided opinion during this summer's FIFA World Cup and the majority of English Premier League football clubs have already imposed a ban on the instrument.

In a statement, the organisation explained: "UEFA is of the view that the vuvuzelas would completely change the atmosphere, drowning supporter emotions and detracting from the experience of the game."

European football's governing body went on to add that although the vuvuzela is part of South African footballing culture, it would be detrimental to the efforts of supporters who wish to express themselves by singing and chanting during games.

In June, a spokesman for the English Premier League confirmed that there is nothing in the division's rules to prohibit vuvuzelas and that it is purely for individual clubs to decide.
