English Premier League transfer spending down

English Premier League football clubs spent less on transfers in the recent close season than they had done for three years, according to new figures released by financial services firm Deloitte.

Overall expenditure on new playing talent fell to £350 million, down by 22 per cent on the previous year's figure and the first drop in three seasons, while teams on the continent were even harder hit by football's recent financial upheaval.

"In general, an absence of new owners and clubs striving to improve their financial balance has diminished the vibrancy of the transfer market," said Dan Jones, a partner at Deloitte's Sports Business Group.

However, free-spending Manchester City have splurged around £125 million on players this summer, helping to push the division's overall net spend to £190 million - more than double last summer's total.

Yesterday (August 31st 2010), the Guardian reported that research conducted by a partner at Grant Thornton found Championship football clubs experienced a sharp reduction in transfer income in the recent transfer window.
