The English Premier League's top four football clubs made tens of millions of pounds from European competition last season, according to statistics published by UEFA.

Official figures released yesterday (August 23rd 2010) showed that Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea earned a combined £114.6 million from UEFA Champions League television rights.

None of England's teams progressed beyond the quarter-finals of the tournament, but benefited from increased income as a result of new agreements with broadcasters ITV and Sky.

Although winners Inter Milan topped the list with individual earnings of £39.8 million, Manchester United followed closely behind with £37.4 million and English Premier League champions Chelsea received £26.3 million.

There was also a financial windfall for defeated UEFA Europa League finalists Fulham, who were paid £8.1 million after an impressive run in the competition, while Liverpool earned £2.3 million after elimination from the UEFA Champions League.

Earlier this month, lawyers for recently-relegated Portsmouth claimed the club's top-flight rivals wanted them to go bust in March to take their share of TV revenue.
