Wolverhampton Wanderers boss slams rule change

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy has criticised the English Premier League's decision to impose quotas on the number of home-grown players in first team squads.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, the former Sunderland and Republic of Ireland boss suggested the rule could have a disproportionate impact on teams near the foot of the division and questioned whether it would have any effect on the national side.

"I don't think it's helping the England team because the eight home-grown players just have to have been here from the age of 16. They could have come from Spain or anywhere else," he said. "Some teams can afford to carry bigger squads."

McCarthy added that the change is unlikely to have much of an impact on his own squad, although he did admit some top teams may be forced to loan players out to stay within the quota.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has also voiced strong opposition to the idea in recent weeks.
