Bidding for Olympic Stadium begins

The organisation in charge of the Olympic Stadium in London has invited interested parties to submit detailed plans for why they should occupy the venue, with West Ham United among the frontrunners.

Bids must be sent to the Olympic Park Legacy Company by the end of September and the east London football club are widely believed to be in pole position to secure the tenancy at the Stratford stadium, which is currently under construction.

English Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur have also expressed an interest, but press reports have suggested the north London side's board of directors floated the idea to force Haringey Council to back proposals to redevelop White Hart Lane.

However, West Ham United are believed to be concerned that the athletics track - the retention of which was a key part of London's bid - is likely to detract from the atmosphere by pushing football fans further back from the playing surface.

Last month, it was revealed that the 2012 English Premier League season's kick-off could be delayed if the Games overrun.
