Manchester United boss warns football fans over protests

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has backed football fans' right to protest against the Glazer family, but warned that the demonstrations must not be targeted at the team.

Writing in the United Review match programme ahead of his side's clash with Newcastle United, Ferguson urged the football club's followers not to distract the players and avoid becoming "mired in so much controversy".

"I have no problem with the Green and Gold campaign. Fans are entitled to protest as they see fit. But not to the detriment of the team," he explained. "So it comes down to the extent of the protest."

Ferguson added that the English Premier League outfit's controversial American owners will not be forced out of Old Trafford and called on the fans to engage in a "collective effort" to spur the team on to success.

The Manchester United Supporters' Trust responded to the comments by claiming that the much-publicised green and gold campaign will continue into the new season.
