Rangers 'dismiss takeover speculation'

Scottish Premier League champions Rangers have reportedly sought to scotch speculation surrounding a possible takeover attempt by Russian investment banker Vladimir Antonov.

According to the Herald Scotland, Antonov's mooted interest in the football club came as something of a surprise to unnamed sources at Ibrox, who claimed that the tycoon's representatives are yet to approach majority shareholder Sir David Murray.

"We've had so much hearsay and grandstanding, the Rangers support are just so sceptical just now," said Rangers Supporters' Club chairman David Edgar. "At the moment, this is just an unsubstantiated rumour."

In recent weeks, Antonov has been forced to deny suggestions he has been involved in money laundering and other criminal activity, with representatives promising a detailed rebuttal of the accusations in the near future.

The news came after the Daily Mail reported that English property developer Andrew Ellis could be about to rekindle his long-standing interest in Rangers by making a £75 million bid.
