Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell has lent his support to the English Premier League's decision to impose home-grown quotas on playing squads from this season and expressed hopes the national side will prosper.

Speaking to the Daily Star, the 19-year-old said the opportunities he has received at Goodison Park have been key to the rapid progression of his career and suggested other youngsters could now find it easier to break into first teams.

"Hopefully you will see a lot more English talent on the pitch this season and that can only benefit the senior side," he explained. "I think there are a lot of young players coming through who have got the talent."

Rodwell added that the sheer volume of foreign players plying their trade in the top flight has restricted the amount of playing time available to native youngsters.

England's disappointing exit from this summer's World Cup has sparked considerable soul-searching on the effect overseas footballers are having on the national team.
