English Premier League spending 'unsustainable'

Bolton Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside has warned rival English Premier League football clubs that they cannot continue to spend large transfer fees on playing talent and must instead invest in youth.

Speaking to the team's official website, Gartside suggested that many top-flight outfits now have no choice but to bring through more domestic youngsters and cannot compete with the likes of free-spending Manchester City in financial terms.

"Being realistic, the youth system has got to work because we can invest in the youth," he explained. "We can't go on forever tipping money into this; it won't work, it's not sustainable."

Gartside also admitted that the side may have alienated some supporters with its particular brand of football and hinted that years in the English Premier League saw the club lose touch with its supporters.

His comments follow Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson's repeated insistence that some sides are requesting excessive fees for unproven players.
