Manchester United 'have money for transfers'

English Premier League football club Manchester United still have funding available for transfers despite their £700 million debt, according to much-maligned chief executive David Gill.

Speaking to MUTV, Gill claimed that manager Sir Alex Ferguson is "very comfortable" with the existing squad at his disposal, despite comments from the Scotsman earlier in the close season that he may be looking to strengthen.

"The money is there if we believe there is a player who can improve what we believe is a very good squad," he said. "The team has been together for a number of years and done very well. In order to improve it, a player has to be of a very high quality."

However, Gill accepted that Ferguson may still opt to invest in new playing talent and claimed the team's scouts are "always looking at players".

Gill has found himself on the receiving end of football fans' criticism for his role in the Glazer family's ownership of Manchester United.
