London 2012 Olympic Games chief Lord Coe is confident British football fans will unite to support the country's joint team at the event in two years' time, although the participation of non-English players appears unlikely.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek, the Conservative peer suggested that many supporters have long wanted to see Great Britain compete in the Olympic football contest, but added that a final decision will come from the relevant authorities.

"If you are asking me do I think the people in Great Britain want to see a Great Britain football team, I am hazarding a guess that they do," he explained. "However, that is not really for me to decide."

The question of a British Olympic football squad has caused alarm at the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish football associations, who fear their unique autonomous status could be put at risk.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp told the programme he would be interested in taking charge of the team at the London Games.
