HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued Sheffield Wednesday with a winding-up petition over an unpaid tax bill.
According to the club, the action relates to an outstanding balance of about £550,000 and a hearing will be held in the High Court on August 11th.
The South Yorkshire outfit is one of several clubs to have received a winding-up order in recent months, with the likes of Portsmouth, Crystal Palace, Cardiff City and Notts County also facing the action.
In a statement, Sheffield Wednesday reassured fans the club is not about to enter administration and said it was "surprised and disappointed" by HMRC's decision to issue a winding-up petition.
"[We] feel their actions are disproportionate and will raise unnecessary speculation as to the financial position of the club," the statement added.
The Owls are known to be seeking fresh investment and were involved in talks with US investment company Club 9 Sports regarding a possible takeover at Hillsborough earlier this year.
