The UEFA Champions League is set to participate in the experimental use of two additional match officials.

According to the International Football Association Board (IFAB), two extra assistant referees will help to control games in European football's elite club competition this season.

Deploying an extra official behind each goal, the system will also be retained for all matches in the UEFA Europa League, where it was introduced on a trial basis last season.

Goal-line technology will be discussed once more at the IFAB's next meeting in October, with several high-profile refereeing mistakes at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa highlighting the issue.

England fans were outraged when officials failed to notice that a strike from Chelsea's Frank Lampard crossed the line during the last-16 clash with Germany.

This season's UEFA Champions League begins next Wednesday (July 28th) for one of the British participants, with Celtic facing Portuguese side Braga in the third qualifying round.
