Tottenham Hotspur ban vuvuzelas

Tottenham Hotspur have announced the banning of vuvuzelas at White Hart Lane citing concerns about the effect the instruments could have on fan safety.

A statement on the football club's website revealed the decision was taken after discussions with licensing authorities and the police about the potential consequences of allowing the controversial horns into the ground.

"We are concerned that the presence of the instruments within the stadium poses unnecessary risks to public safety and could impact on the ability of all supporters to hear any emergency safety announcements," the north London side said.

Spurs are the first English Premier League team to make the move, but it is possible that more could follow.

There were a large number of complaints about vuvuzelas during the FIFA World Cup, with spectators likening the noise made by the horns to a swarm of bees and arguing that they harmed the atmosphere at matches.

Despite this, thousands of them were bought by fans across the UK and they are expected to be heard at games during the coming season.
