Southampton announce vuvuzela ban

League One football club Southampton have revealed that the controversial vuvuzela will not be allowed to make any appearances at St Mary's next season.

In recent weeks, representatives from the Football League and English Premier League have been quick to insist that it is down to individual sides to decide, but Southampton are among the first to prohibit it.

"Vuvuzelas may be part of the tradition of football matches played in South Africa, but they won't become a part of the game at St Mary's this season," the South Coast club said in a statement.

Southampton acknowledged that thousands of the plastic horns have been sold in Britain throughout the duration of the FIFA World Cup, but added that the decision had been taken "in the interest of everyone's enjoyment".

Other Football League clubs to ban football fans from taking vuvuzelas into their stadia include Cardiff City, Ipswich Town and Leicester City.
