The start of the English Premier League season in 2012 could be postponed depending on the scheduling of the Olympic Games in London, it has been revealed.

Speaking at a press conference, London 2012 chief executive Paul Deighton admitted there remains a possibility that the showpiece athletics event could yet overlap with the big footballing kick-off in England's professional divisions.

"I can confirm that we have been in discussion with all the sports bodies responsible for schedules in the UK in 2012 and we are on track to meet that obligation [to avoid clashes]," he explained.

When the International Olympic Committee awarded the games to England's capital city, it did so on the understanding that they would not overlap with other major sporting events such as the football and Test cricket.

The English Premier League has itself come under heavy criticism over the last few weeks, following England's ignominious exit from the FIFA World Cup.
