Southend United boss pleads for football fans' support

Recently-appointed Southend United manager Paul Sturrock has urged the League Two side's football fans to keep the faith in spite of a string of off-field concerns.

Sturrock signed a three-year deal at Roots Hall earlier this week and said he understands why supporters are so unhappy with chairman Ron Martin's management of the football club, following the sacking of popular manager Steve Tilson.

"Whatever happens politically or off the park, I think that is [usually] secondary to a football fan," he told BBC Essex. "Yes, there's frustration at the minute and everybody can appreciate why."

The team are currently under threat of a High Court winding up order from HM Revenue and Customs, are subject to a transfer embargo and have just ten professional footballers in their squad ahead of the new season.

Yesterday (July 7th 2010), the Southend Echo reported that Martin was confronted by an unhappy supporter before the press conference at which Sturrock was unveiled.
