Liverpool football fans hold Independence Day rally

Football fans of debt-stricken English Premier League side Liverpool have staged a protest against unpopular owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

Held to coincide with American Independence Day on Sunday (July 4th 2010), an estimated 2,000 supporters gathered in the city's St George's Plateau to hear from former footballers, musicians and comedians.

"It's not just about making a noise and feeling better, it's about making a difference. We want to represent the average supporter in the street," Spirit of Shankly (SoS) committee member Paul Rice told the Daily Post.

The rally was part of ongoing attempts to achieve full fan ownership of Liverpool and SoS representatives have recently been in discussions with fellow supporters' group Share Liverpool, which is aiming to raise the £500 million needed to buy the club.

Last week, recently-appointed chairman Martin Broughton admitted that the board of directors is yet to receive a serious takeover offer, but claimed a number of parties are interested.
