Football clubs 'forced to slash costs'

The economic downturn has forced football clubs to cut the prices of match tickets and replica kits, new research has suggested.

A survey conducted by financial services firm Virgin Money has found the average cost of attending football games has dropped to a two-year low, falling by five per cent over the last year to reach £84.89, the Press Association has reported.

"It appears that clubs have got the message that fans cannot keep on paying more and more for football and are giving something back," spokesman Grant Mather explained.

Although the average prices of tickets and shirts have both fallen - to £22.56 and £23.75 respectively - other matchday costs have gone in the opposite direction, with food and programme magazines both more expensive, along with fuel.

Last month, Liverpool announced a controversial season ticket price hike of seven per cent on last term, but claimed their charges remain competitive when compared to some English Premier League rivals.
