Plymouth Argyle boss opposed to winter break

Recently-appointed Plymouth Argyle manager Peter Reid has dismissed suggestions that a winter break should be introduced during the football season to ease the pressure on players.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, the former Manchester City boss and assistant at Stoke City suggested the needs of football fans should come first and said the festive spell is one of the most important points in the sporting calendar.

"Our game is about supporters and supporters love the Christmas period," he explained. "If you can get [the winter break] after January and fit it into the programme then maybe."

His comments came after England coach Fabio Capello claimed a rest period in the middle of the season could prove beneficial to the national side after another disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign.

The Italian told reporters his players had not displayed the same sort of form they had shown either side of the busy Christmas schedule.
