Stoke City football fans have been paid nearly £200,000 by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) after the force admitted it had illegally imprisoned supporters inside a pub near Salford in November 2008.
The group were effectively locked inside the pub in Irlam ahead of their team's clash with Manchester United and prevented from travelling on to Old Trafford by police officers, who then issued them with banning orders under a piece of anti-terror legislation.
In a statement, GMP's director of legal services Sian Williams said: "At the time, the use of the powers was new and we have since taken steps to improve our understanding of the legislation to try to prevent this from happening again."
Ms Williams also admitted that the police had "erroneously" applied their powers under Section 27 of the Violent Crime Reduction Act.
The news came as BBC News reported that English football followers in South Africa were praised for their behaviour by British law enforcement officers in the country.
