Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI), the company tasked with the management of the much-maligned playing surface at Wembley Stadium, has resigned from the role after just over a year in charge.

The firm took charge of the pitch - which has been relaid 11 times since the ground first opened its doors three years ago - in May 2009, but after months of intense criticism, STRI will make way for a new contractor.

STRI chief executive Gordon McKillop claimed his business had held "constructive and positive" discussions with senior figures at the English FA, but the new strategy will not require its oversight and so the company has opted to withdraw.

"The crucial balance for us is to maintain a good quality playing surface for football, whilst at the same time fulfilling our business plan commitments and maintaining our heritage as a multi-event venue," Wembley managing director Roger Malin said.

Last season, the pitch came under fire from Chelsea captain John Terry and Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp.
