Football fans praised by Manchester council

Football fans who gathered to watch England's most recent FIFA World Cup match have earned plaudits from Manchester City Council.

An estimated 10,000 supporters filled the city's Castlefield Basin to watch the national side take on Algeria in the group stage of international football's showpiece event, but despite the disappointing showing on the field, the local authority is delighted with how the evening went.

"It was fantastic here and the fans here have done Manchester and the nation proud," councillor Mike Amesbury told the Manchester Evening News. "The only frustration was the performance on the pitch."

Suggestions alcohol should be banned from the venue were dismissed by the council in the run-up to the match last Friday (June 18th), but stewards were employed to turn away anyone who appeared to be drunk before they could gain entry.

Last month, the Bristol Evening Post reported that local football fans had organised a petition urging the city council to set up a dedicated fan zone for the duration of the tournament.
