English Premier League 'will not ban vuvuzelas'

A spokesman for the English Premier League has admitted that the division can do little to ban the controversial vuvuzela from making appearances at matches next season.

The instrument has so far dominated proceedings at the FIFA World Cup and has caused consternation among many foreign viewers and footballers, but England's top flight admits it can do nothing to stop football fans bringing them to domestic games.

"Nothing in our rules specifically prohibits musical instruments from being brought into grounds as these matters are dealt with at a club level," the representative explained. "It will be down to stadium managers."

The news came after a report in the Guardian claimed the BBC are considering introducing a filter to cancel out the noise of the instrument, which has also been criticised by a number of the tournament's top footballing stars.

Around 220 complaints have been made to the broadcaster since the event began, the newspaper revealed.
