Celtic boss slams Scottish Premier League referees

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has issued fierce criticism of the standard of officiating in the Scottish Premier League, claiming his team suffered at the hands of referees last season.

Officials at the Glasgow football club were vocal in their dismay after several decisions went the way of arch-rivals Rangers during last term's Old Firm derby matches and Lennon, who replaced Tony Mowbray last season, agrees.

"I think some of the decisions we had last season were abysmal," he said. "Particularly in the high-profile games - the Rangers games in particular. The club were justified in making a point about it."

The Northern Irishman encouraged his players to show greater "affinity" with Celtic and suggested they should be more assertive in making referees aware of their unhappiness with certain decisions.

Last month, the Scottish Premier League announced plans to overhaul the current disciplinary system, including scrapping officials' ability to veto appeals against red cards.
