Football fans encouraged to take fitness test

English football fans have been urged to take part in an online fitness test which will compare their physical condition to their counterparts in other countries.

Ahead of this summer's FIFA World Cup, the NHS and the Men's Health Forum charity have launched a new website which asks visitors about their exercise habits, dietary preferences, weight and sexual health and organisers are urging supporters to get involved.

Public health minister Anne Milton expressed hopes that football's showpiece event will inspire lovers of the game to consider playing more often and suggested Sunday league football could be a good way to get more exercise.

"Hopefully watching some of the best and fittest players in the world [at the FIFA World Cup] will inspire people to get active - whether that means getting their football boots on or any other form of exercise," she said.

In May, research carried out by Mintel discovered that 63 per cent of football fans intend to increase their leisure spending during this month's tournament in South Africa.
