Liverpool football fans protest against owners

Liverpool football fans have stepped up their opposition against unpopular American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks, following the removal of manager Rafael Benitez yesterday (June 3rd).

Supporters gathered outside Anfield to express their support for the deposed boss, carrying banners expressing dissent against the American pair and chanting slogans urging them to leave the club.

Steve Quinn, of fans' group Spirit of Shankly, said the demonstration was intended to "send a message" to potential buyers, adding: "They are investing in a football club and they are investing in a community - they are not investing in a business whose primary aim is to create a profit."

Further action is planned for July 4th, American Independence Day, with Reds followers due to march from St George's Hall to Anfield to further raise awareness of the English Premier League side's plight.

In a letter to the Times last month, former Liverpool chairman David Moores denounced Gillett and Hicks' management of the club.
