Football fans 'want to see salary cap'

Football Supporters News

Football fans favour the introduction of a cap on footballers' salaries, according to new research.

A survey conducted by the Football Fans Census for the Times revealed 60 per cent of more than 5,000 English Premier League supporters quizzed said they would support such a measure, with 16 per cent unsure.

The poll also uncovered dissatisfaction with referees among fans in the lower reaches of English football's top flight, with just 40 Burnley, Stoke City and Wigan Athletic fans happy with the officiating performances they witnessed over the course of last season.

Manchester United and Liverpool followers expressed disapproval of the directors in charge of their clubs, with approval ratings of 39 per cent and 17 per cent respectively, while just 11 per cent of Portsmouth fans were pleased with their side's board after a troubled season.

Earlier this week, former Liverpool chairman David Moores wrote a letter to the newspaper urging current owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks to sell their holding in the Anfield outfit.
