Former referee Graham Poll has criticised UEFA's plans to retain the additional goal-line officials used in this season's UEFA Europa League and has urged European football's governing body to introduce new technology.

The organisation will use the new referees in next season's UEFA Champions League and the European Championship in 2012, but the Englishman is sceptical as to whether the measure will significantly reduce officiating errors.

In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Poll said: "It is surely time to give technology an opportunity. Try it in the something like the Carling Cup. If it disrupts the flow of play, then they can say technology isn't helping."

The former English Premier League referee acknowledged that the additional assistants had prevented some mistakes, but suggested human error will always be a part of football unless video replays are used.

Yesterday (May 27th), UEFA also confirmed its intention to introduce its controversial financial fair play proposals, aimed at curbing reckless spending activity.
