English Premier League players call for grassroots investment

Three English Premier League footballers have written to leading figures at governing bodies in an attempt to persuade them to invest in non-league youth development.

Aston Villa defender Curtis Davies, Stoke City striker Dave Kitson and Jack Collison of West Ham United have sent a joint letter to Football League chairman Greg Clarke, FA football development director Sir Trevor Brooking and English Premier League chief Richard Scudamore urging them to redirect funding.

Kitson told the Guardian he would like to hold face-to-face discussions about the issue and said: "I have got no axe to grind or anything personal to gain. I just think this is a real chance to do some good at a level of football which is often overlooked."

The 30-year-old dismissed suggestions the three players are simply trying to boost their own profile and claimed lower-league football's funding troubles have been largely ignored.

Earlier this month, the Football League and English Premier League reached a deal over parachute payments for relegated clubs.
