Tottenham Hotspur stadium plans rejected

Tottenham Hotspur's proposals for a £400 million redevelopment of their White Hart Lane stadium have been thrown out by Haringey Council.

Complaints from English Heritage and concerns over the impact on local transport were cited as key factors for the local authority's rejection of the plans and the club will now have to go back to the drawing board.

Chairman Daniel Levy remained upbeat after the announcement, expressing hope the matter will be resolved "shortly", adding: "There is undoubtedly huge support for the development and for retaining the club in the borough."

Originally, the revamp would have required the demolition of four listed buildings, but criticism from conservationists is believed to have figured heavily in the council's thinking and Tottenham Hotspur will have to consider making alternative arrangements.

The team sealed qualification for the lucrative UEFA Champions League for the first time this season, beating big-spending challengers Manchester City to fourth spot.
