Manchester United owners 'have brought benefits'

Manchester United chief executive David Gill insists the club's unpopular owners have been "true to their word" since their controversial leveraged buyout five years ago.

Gill has increasingly found himself on the receiving end of supporters' ire for his defence of the Glazer regime, but has again rejected criticism that their £720 million debt is having an adverse effect on transfer dealings and performances on the pitch.

He claimed next term's season ticket sales remain "on track" despite suggestions of a boycott, adding: "We're very confident the business model we have in place will ensure the club can continue to compete at the top of football for many years to come."

Despite protests against the Americans escalating during the course of last season, Gill restated his belief that they had brought "commercial benefit and commercial expertise" to the Old Trafford outfit since their arrival.

Earlier in the week, Manchester United announced a new sponsorship deal with Chilean winery Concho y Toro.
