Football fans 'to spend big during FIFA World Cup'

Football Supporters News

England's football fans are set to provide a timely boost to the country's economy during this summer's FIFA World Cup, according to a new study.

A survey conducted by consumer research firm Mintel found that 63 per cent of supporters quizzed expect to increase their leisure spending throughout the tournament's run, with football followers in the north-west of England taking a particular interest.

Mintel's Richard Cope told BBC News that the timing of the event could prove fortunate as the UK edges its way out of recession, adding: "Sport can be a significant driver of the feel good factor that encourages happy consumers to spend."

However, the poll also suggested that English spectators are not relying on a strong performance from the national team to draw them in, with only one in ten planning to buy a flag or shirt.

Yesterday (May 11th), England boss Fabio Capello postponed the launch of his Capello Index player ratings website.
