England manager Fabio Capello has put back the opening of a new website ranking the performances of international players until after this summer's FIFA World Cup.
The Capello Index tool had been formally announced yesterday (May 10th), prior to the final confirmation of his provisional 30-man England squad for this summer's tournament in South Africa, but is now not expected to launch until the next domestic season.
Earlier, Capello had said: "Football provokes passion and debate. We wanted to create a system for measuring performance which fans could really relate to."
Although the Italian was never likely to rate the footballers himself, concerns were raised that the site could be a distraction from injury-troubled England's attempts to win their first FIFA World Cup in 44 years and the fact that a gambling firm is behind the Capello Index was also questioned.
It has also emerged that England fans heading to South Africa next month could face disruption as British Airways cabin crew prepare to go on strike.
